Two of Bimose Tribal Council’s member First Nation communities have been recognized nationally for their innovative housing projects.
Iskatewizaagegan No. 39 Independent First Nation and Niisaachewan Anishinaabe Nation were both named 2026 Community Housing Recognition Award winners at this week’s First Nations Housing Conference. The awards are presented annually by the First Nations Housing Community to highlight successful housing initiatives taking place across First Nation communities.
Iskatewizaagegan No. 39 received recognition for their Land, Leadership & Legacy: First Nations Timber Home Project, which delivered four new three-bedroom family homes with full basements, including one fully accessible unit. The homes were built using locally milled wood and high-performance structural insulated panels, creating durable, energy-efficient housing designed to withstand northern conditions while reducing long-term operating costs for families.
Niisaachewan Anishinaabe Nation was recognized for their Micro-Subdivision Development Project, an innovative approach to housing development that creates smaller, serviceable residential lots when traditional expansion options are limited. The project includes extending communal water, wastewater, and hydro services, along with roadway, drainage, and site preparation work, helping create build-ready lots for future homes and supporting long-term community growth.
Bimose Tribal Council supported both projects alongside community leadership and technical partners, and is also a proud partner of the First Nations Housing Conference where the awards were presented.
These projects demonstrate the strength of community-driven housing solutions that support healthier homes, sustainable infrastructure, and stronger futures for First Nation communities.
